NEW YORK, October 1, 2026 — The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) welcomes the decision by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York to deny all six motions filed by the ATP, the WTA, and the organizers of Wimbledon, Roland Garros, and the US Open in Pospisil et al. v. ATP Tour, Inc. et al.
In a 66-page opinion, Judge Margaret M. Garnett rejected every effort to end, divide, or relocate the case, including:
• The WTA’s and USTA’s attempts to force players into private arbitration
• The ATP’s attempt to move the men’s claims to Delaware
• The Wimbledon and Roland Garros organizers’ attempt to avoid the jurisdiction of a U.S. court
• The defendants’ motions to dismiss the players’ claims
• The Tours’ motion to remove the PTPA from the case
The Court held the players’ allegations that the defendants illegally coordinated to restrict prize money, co-opt players’ commercial rights, wield rankings points as a weapon, and the draconian calendar are sufficient for the case to proceed. The Court also held that the PTPA has standing to pursue reform on behalf of all players. The PTPA does not seek damages. It seeks structural reform of how professional tennis treats the athletes who make the sport.
The case now moves forward in New York, and the parties will appear before the Court on October 29.
“For years, players were told this case would never get past the first hurdle. It has,” said Romain Rosenberg, Executive Director of the PTPA. “Every defendant stays. Every claim stays. The players’ association stays. Our door has always been open. Tennis Australia showed that a defendant can choose cooperation and reform over litigation. We invite every remaining defendant to make the same choice.”
“We started the PTPA because players had no real voice in the decisions that shape our careers,” said Vasek Pospisil, PTPA co-founder. “Today, a federal court made clear that the players’ association can stand up for players in court. That matters to every player on tour, not just those whose names are on the complaint.”
